We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Center for Science in the Public Interest.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Last month at a Town Hall meeting in Edmond, Senator Tom Coburn responded to a question on the inadequacy of our schools’ nutrition standards for foods sold in vending machines, a la carte snack lines and school stores.  He agreed that the USDA should re-examine these requirements and find a way to strengthen them.

While the senator seems receptive to policy efforts to improve school nutrition, he needs to hear from Oklahoma residents that they want soda and junk food out of our nation’s schools.

Please urge Senator Coburn (R-OK) to cosponsor the bipartisan Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act, S. 771. This bill would call on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to bring its nutrition standards for foods sold out of vending machines, school stores, and alongside meals in step with current nutrition science. The new standards would apply to all foods sold on campus throughout the school day.

As Senator Coburn is one of the few medical doctors in the Senate, his support is critical.  Please take a moment to send a quick message to Senator Coburn and ask him to cosponsor this school nutrition bill. Also, please help by passing this alert along to friends and family. Thank you in advance for your help!
